Vertical Slice
These past few weeks have been a major crunch for the team as we prepared for our first major milestone: Vertical Slice presentation. For readers unaware of this scrum & game development terminology, a vertical slice (VS) is a milestone and deadline that emphasizes demonstrating progress across all components of a project (Capstone, in our case). Like layers of a cake, a Vertical Slice consists of multiple components "layers" such as the User Interface & User Experience (UI/UX), the Service (in our case, this refers to the Gameplay, Combat, & Narrative), and the Data (a collection of metrics & analyses based on our administrative processes & organizational structure).
Below is a deep-dive into what the hell we have been up to, so get ready and get HYPED!
(Imp Head Audience HYPE meter)
All Things Art
(Rocks, Rails, Skulls, Chairs, Jumbotron, Arena, and all! Of course, we can't forget our fans!)
Our Artists have been through hell in working to deliver assets for The Rings of Hell. Cheer them on from near or afar! Someone real aught to pay them more; or ya'know, pay them at all!
Coding & Programming
(I know, I know, I don't understand any of this, either! Just kidding!)
This is a snapshot of a wrestler's animation state machine and a very small preview of the heavy-lifting that our Programmers do. Here, we can see the inner-workings on how our wrestlers fight, such as jumping, landing, combo attacks, and so on!
Design, Design, Design
As one can see, our Design Team has been busy creating fun items for players to use! Stay tuned, as we will go into more detail on what the Design department has been up to in the next blog post!
Production & Management
(It's all about the number-crunching! Whoopsh!)
Using Scrum agile development framework alongside Jira for scheduling and task-management, our Project Lead and department sub-leads have charted our team's development hours from Sprint 1 to Sprint 3 (Vertical Slice). Sprint 1 entailed 427 total man hours, Sprint 2 totaled 398.5 man hours, and Sprint 3 (leading up to Vertical Slice) reached 537.25 man hours, with 1,352.75 man hours spent during the first 3 Sprints, with 4 Sprints (8 weeks) left in the Spring semester, or 1,680 man hours remaining!
And, now, the moment all have been waiting for: The Rings of Hell Gameplay Demo!
But, first, a word from our sponsors:
Just kidding... Here it is, ad-free:

The Road Ahead
(It's all about the Journey, not the Destination!)
The team received a lot of constructive feedback from fellow instructors and students both during and after the Vertical Slice presentation, and some notable memes & in-jokes ensued. At the top of and over the hill of Vertical Slice, with reflection points aside, the team is excited about the near future for the Rings of Hell, so keep a look out for future behind-the-scenes updates!
